The ground floor conversion of this Victorian terrace house in East London for a family focused on the creation of an open plan kitchen and dining space that becomes the heart of the home.

Taking apart the previous window-less kitchen and lean-to at the rear of the house, the internal walls were removed and the ceiling raised to create a generously proportioned space with views into the garden, framed by two large slim-profile sliding doors. Automated roof lights are introduced towards the deeper part of the plan to both drop light into the darker part of the room and provide cross ventilation to the south facing kitchen.

Working on a tight budget, cost-effective IKEA units are 'hacked' and used in combination with bespoke Corian and Bamboo plywood to create a suite of adaptive joinery which organises the open plan space. Whilst providing ample storage, the cupboards and draws also conceals structural columns and form the structure for a dining bench. The clean lines and whiteness of the units are contrasted against the warmth and textures of the oiled bamboo plywood, which forms the desk, the dining table and the bench top.
